The Opportunity in Insurance Linked Strategies

Insurance Linked Strategies offer genuine diversification from cyclical asset classes, record high yields and social ESG benefits. Traditional investment markets, whether public or private, currently face the risk of a faltering economy. With ILS running on a different cycle to other markets, having fundamentally different drivers of return and particularly attractive potential returns Leadenhall describe how Local Authorities can consider a strategic allocation in their pension funds to ILS.

Global Real Estate Equity and Debt - Real Returns and Real Impact in 2024

To fully explore the opportunities available we'll have two short presentations followed by: a discussion to the relative prospects with questions from the audience

2023 saw a significant reduction in Global Real Estate values as a result of rising interest rates. Liquidity and financing pressures have so far constrained activity but 2024 promises to be a once in a generational vintage.

Across real estate equity and debt, whether it’s diversification, real impact, attractive income or higher returning investment returns, there are interesting opportunities available, depending on your portfolio’s requirements.

Place-Based Impact Investing (PBII): An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Currently only a small fraction of UK pension money is invested directly in the UK in ways that could drive more inclusive and sustainable development. The Government proposes to require LGPS funds to have a plan to invest up to 5% of assets to support Levelling Up in the UK.  How should LGPS funds approach designing their investment strategies in relation to Levelling Up? Economic development over the last 40 years has not worked so we need to do things differently. Understanding the scale and complexity of the Levelling Up challenge is important for the LGPS funds to have a realistic and wider perspective on their role. The Good Economy’s work on place-based impact investing has demonstrated that there are opportunities in sectors including affordable housing, small and medium-enterprise (SME) finance, clean energy, infrastructure and regeneration that would create positive social, economic and environmental outcomes for people and places across the UK while delivering appropriate, risk-adjusted financial returns.

Empowering Local Communities with Real Estate Debt

The UK is in the midst of a well documented and highly publicised housing crisis, it shows no sign of abating and every Local Authority in the UK is under pressure to deliver more homes. Real Estate Private Debt has developed into a key funding mechanism for the provision of much needed affordable homes. This presentation will highlight how the asset class can truly benefit Local Government Pension Scheme investment, bringing diversified financial returns, alongside tangible Environmental and Social impact whilst supporting their communities with a place based UK investment thesis.

Pooling and Levelling Up/PE: What next?

The UK Government has signaled its intention to implement proposals which would accelerate LGPS pooling, require funds to set a plan for investing in levelling up and set target levels for private equity investment. These proposals have met with opposition in the consultation phase and raise difficult questions around the fiduciary duties of administering authorities. This presentation will consider what that means for pools and funds as they look ahead to the publication of revised guidance and draft regulations.
