John O'Brien

Mercer
John is a Dublin-based partner in Mercer and leads its European Strategic Risk Management group, a network of colleagues specialising in assisting larger and more sophisticated pension funds and insurance companies to navigate areas such as capital allocation, risk management, efficient financing of long dated liabilities, risk transfer and balance sheet management. He has twenty-six years of experience working in the investment and financial services industry, of which the last fourteen have been in Mercer. During his time in Mercer, John has led on several ground-breaking transactions in the UK and European markets, and more recently has been instrumental in establishing a delegated risk management key function holder proposition for clients falling under the IORP Directive. He acts as a director of Mercer ICC, a Mercer-owned captive insurance company that was established as an innovative means for schemes to cost-effectively transfer longevity risk to the reinsurance market. Prior to joining Mercer, he worked for two years in an IFSC-based regulatory capital specialist investment firm, preceded by ten years across various roles in Irish Life Investment Managers where he led a Financial Engineering team, acted as a fixed income and LDI portfolio manager, and as a quantitative analyst and product development specialist across the asset classes. John graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1995 with a first-class honours degree and gold medal in Mathematics. He qualified as a CFA in 2001, a QFA in 2020 and completed an MA in History of Family with University of Limerick in 2022. He has lectured on various postgraduate programs in Dublin, covering topics such as equity research, risk management, portfolio management and quantitative finance.
